Functional Security Engineer:
Role Description
The Functional Safety Engineer will support ISO 26262 Functional Safety and SOTIF (ISO/PAS 21448) activities for automotive platforms. The role involves executing key concept-phase safety activities such as Item Definition, Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Safety Goal alignment, and Fault Tolerant Time Interval (FTTI) justification. The engineer will also contribute to customer capability building and long-term safety process sustainability.
Responsibilities
• Develop and document Item Definition, including system boundaries, interfaces, assumptions, and limitations.
• Perform Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), including:
o Hazard identification
o Hazardous event definition
o Severity, Exposure, and Controllability classification
o ASIL determination
• Align and adapt existing OEM Safety Goals to identified hazards and system granularity.
• Support SOTIF analysis, including identification of performance limitations and triggering conditions.
• Define and justify Fault Tolerant Time Interval (FTTI) based on system architecture and fault reaction mechanisms.
• Document safety assumptions, methodologies, and decision-making rationale clearly and systematically.
• Support functional safety reviews, workshops, and training sessions with internal and customer teams.
• Contribute to functional safety audits and assessment readiness.
Must-Have Skills
• Hands-on experience applying ISO 26262 to automotive systems
• Strong proficiency in safety analysis methods such as HARA, FMEA, and FTA
• Knowledge of automotive systems including ADAS, Powertrain, Chassis, and Body Control
• Solid understanding of automotive electrical and electronic architectures and hardware interfaces
• Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Ethernet)
• Ability to produce clear, structured, high-quality safety documentation
• Experience using MATLAB/Simulink for model-based software development and analysis
Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Science Engineering, or a related field
• 5+ years of experience in automotive functional safety engineering
• Strong hands-on experience with HARA and Safety Goal definition
• Experience working within OEM or Tier-1 functional safety processes
• Experience with SOTIF (ISO/PAS 21448) is preferred
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Self-motivated, team-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities
